Cake is eaten
The other day I had lunch with the president of Interfaith Community, here in the city. We ate in the private dining room of the building fondly called “the GodBox,” by those who know it, because it houses so many religious organizations. It’s a massive block of sandy colored stone, overlooking Grant’s Tomb and Riverside Park. There was a refined, understated buffet, and at the end of it sat two moist, untouched, round cakes. Carrot and chocolate. I ate a gigantic slice of chocolate cake with my meal. The president of Interfaith Community said, “You’re very unique,” gesturing at my two plates. I’d finished most of the cake before I touched my broccoli. There really isn’t much more to that story, but I thought of, well, Eat the Damn Cake. Because I was. And I was a little proud of myself. Which just goes to show you how transformative this whole project is.
And in honor of that thought, here are some amazing photographs that Stephanie sent me:
You rock, Stephanie!!! Eat that cake!

Un-roast: Today I love my ability to sometimes capture someone’s exact expression in a sketch. And my fascination with people’s faces.
P.S. My feminism piece is now in Huffpo, where it can continue to make people really annoyed 🙂

Oh I love those pictures! I envision an Eat the Damn Cake art installation inspired by this.
…in fact, that’s a really good idea.

I’ve had 2 recent cake eating moments. I was spending annual time with extended family and there were many cakes, pies and other delectables to be had. One evening my aunt commented (happily) on my eating a piece of caramel cake, noting that I would take the icing and place it on cake bites from the middle that had no icing. I smiled grandly and put another piece in my mouth. My last day there, I had another piece of caramel cake for breakfast.
Then yesterday I enjoyed a lemon cupcake at lunch. Same routine, making sure that each bite of the lemon cake had a bit of icing from the top. Delicious!

Frosting distribution is key!! My friend showed me her trick for eating a cupcake: In order to have frosting in every bite, she removes the bottom half of the cake portion of the cupcake and places it on the top, on the frosting. This creates a “cupcake sandwich”. You get frosting in every bite, rather than being left with a plain bit of cupcake at the end, plus you don’t get as much frosting all over your face (although licking the icing from your lips can be half the fun!). Somehow, you don’t have to open your mouth quite as wide either.
It would be so fun to have a gallery page of readers enjoying their cakes (or cupcakes)!

I made and ate a chocolate chiffon cake today with a frosting from a recipe website called “That’s the Best Frosting I’ve Ever Had”. And it goes perfectly with chocolate cake. It was delicious.
